As main contractor for the Le Marchant House refurbishment project, we worked in partnership with Tyrrell Dowinton Architects (TDA), where the project involved modernising the existing four level protected commercial building, and creating a large welcoming reception area featuring a spiral staircase and lift lobby.
Some of the most challenging aspects of the build were the structural alterations to the basement carpark involving removal of a spine wall, stripping and replacing all roof coverings and structure to the six roofs, and the installation of two helical staircases, each weighing nearly 2 tons. These staircases had to be maneuvered through a small door, hoisted, and constructed in place.
The large, open-plan office floors underwent significant transformation, including the removal of the old plant room centrally located within the second-floor office space. In its place, a glazed atrium was constructed, extending down through to the first floor to provide natural light to the heart of the open office areas.
The building's facilities now include individual toilets on each floor and showers on the lower floor to promote active travel, complemented by secure bicycle parking. Additionally, the modifications ensured that disabled access was available throughout the building, incorporating an accessible shower and accessible toilets on every floor.
