Founded with a commitment to positive change, our community initiatives focus on both local and global impact. We are dedicated to building opportunities for everyone, championing inclusivity, and empowering individuals to thrive together as a united community.

Local support

With its strong Guernsey heritage and roots in the local community, Rihoy & Son is fully committed to empowering the islands’ young people through sport.

This initiative not only reflects the company’s strong community values, but also its genuine interest in the holistic development of the next generation.

Young rollers

Launched by the Guernsey Bowling Club with the support of Rihoy & Son, Young Rollers is a new initiative to introduce the next generation to lawn bowls through free Sunday morning sessions. Bowling is an excellent activity for children, promoting physical fitness, hand-eye coordination and social interaction. It instils a sense of sportsmanship and provides a fun, inclusive environment for all skill levels.

Rihoy hotshots youth hockey

Rihoy & Son has made a 3-year commitment to support junior hockey at the Guernsey Hockey Club, including the Club’s schools’ outreach programme, Hotshots. The sponsorship supports a full-time coach actively promoting hockey throughout Guernsey schools, to encourage greater student take up. There are also organised training sessions at the Guernsey Hockey Club throughout the season (for students aged 4–18).

Northerners AC

The company has been involved as main sponsor of Northerners AC since 2003 providing financial support across every age group, from the young minis to North’s successful 1st XI team. However, the family’s association dates back over 85 years when Jack Rihoy, who founded Rihoy & Son in 1924, was passionate about the club and had a policy that there would always be work available at the company for North players.

Guernsey rugby academy

In an extended 3-year commitment, we are delighted to continue our support for the Guernsey Rugby Academy, providing opportunities for around 350 children aged 5 – 18 to play rugby on the island in the UK. The scheme promotes core values of the game, including teamwork, respect, enjoyment, discipline and sportsmanship and resonates well with our own business culture.

Guernsey 2023 islands games

In 2023, Rihoy and Son emerged as dedicated supporters of both the Golf and Sailing teams at the Island Games, exemplifying their unwavering commitment to sports in the community and allowing these talented athletes to compete at the highest level.

The EJ Rihoy Charitable Trust

The EJ Rihoy Charitable Trust support is targeted at institutions that have dedicated and talented leadership drawn from within local communities who have demonstrated that, with a small amount of initial seed funding and external support, they have the energy, commitment and dedication to address the problems facing their own communities.

In addition to providing its own financial support, the EJ Rihoy Charitable Trust also works in close collaboration with the Guernsey Overseas Aid & Development Committee (OA&DC), which provides additional funding for the development of infrastructure.

Building future leaders - The David Mahungu Leadership Foundation (DMLF)

In 2024, the Trust began a new partnership with the David Mahungu Leadership Foundation (DMLF), a Kenyan organisation focused on developing young leaders from marginalised backgrounds.

That partnership is now set to become the Trust’s primary overseas focus. Over the next few years, the Trust will support the Foundation’s ambitious growth plan – from working with 20 students in 2025 to reaching 500 by 2030.

Completion of the Segera Mission Hospital, Laikipia, Kenya

The EJ Rihoy Charitable Trust, with support from the Guernsey Overseas Aid & Development Commission (OA&DC), has helped transform the Segera Mission Dispensary in Kenya into a four-storey referral hospital.

Originally planned as a small maternity wing, the project expanded significantly through local partnerships and donor support – now offering full maternity, surgical, paediatric and ICU services to communities across Laikipia.

Improving water and kitchen facilities at St. Stevens School, Githogoro, Nairobi

In Nairobi’s informal settlements, thousands of children rely on small, independent schools for their education. Yet, due to land ownership issues, these schools frequently face evictions, forcing students out of the classroom and into uncertainty.

Recognising this urgent need for a stable learning environment, the EJ Rihoy Charitable Trust, in collaboration with Earth Angels, St. Stevens School, and architect Georgia Fernandes (Untamed Architecture, Kenya), helped bring the Mobile Classroom Unit to life.

From Maternity Clinic to hospital - update on Segera, Kenya

Our recent Kenya trip gave us the opportunity for an update on the Segera Mission Foundation (SMF) hospital project in Laikipia, Kenya. This is a great example of how the Trust’s principle of working with local institutions and leadership maximises impact and creates complimentary opportunities for development.

We set out to fund a 20-bed maternity clinic but thanks to the initial support of the Trust and Guernsey Overseas Aid & Development Commission (OA&DC), this seed funding was leveraged by our local partners, the Segera Mission Foundation, to gain considerable additional support from the Kenyan Government, and Kenyan supporters. Making a difference to global communities, Malawi

Our small grants programme allows communities to then access much larger grants from local government and international donors. An example of this process in action was recently demonstrated in Malawi, where our initial grant of £3,000 to a Community Based Organisation (CBO) ultimately secured a further US $171,000. These funds are now being effectively used to enhance the management of Kasungu National Park in Malawi, bordering Zambia.
