For over two decades, Rihoy & Son’s international support has been guided by the EJ Rihoy Charitable Trust. Since 1998, the Trust has provided financial aid to some of the world’s most vulnerable communities, ensuring that grassroots initiatives led by dedicated local leaders receive the resources needed to create lasting change.
One of the most recent projects supported by the Trust is the Mobile Classroom Unit in Nairobi, Kenya.
In Nairobi’s informal settlements, thousands of children rely on small, independent schools for their education. Yet, due to land ownership issues, these schools frequently face evictions, forcing students out of the classroom and into uncertainty. Recognising this urgent need for a stable learning environment, the EJ Rihoy Charitable Trust, in collaboration with Earth Angels, St. Stevens School, and architect Georgia Fernandes (Untamed Architecture, Kenya), helped bring the Mobile Classroom Unit to life.
This modular, portable classroom can be assembled in just eight hours using locally available materials. With a low-cost design (just £1,700 per unit), it is 80% cheaper than traditional classrooms yet provides the same essential learning space for 18 students.
But this initiative goes beyond education. The classroom’s multi-functional design allows it to also serve as:
Additionally, the project incorporates local youth in the construction process, equipping them with valuable hands-on skills that open up employment opportunities.
The EJ Rihoy Charitable Trust believes in sustainable change through strong local leadership. That’s why we focus on funding projects where community-driven initiatives can thrive beyond initial seed funding.
This Mobile Classroom Unit is just one example of how innovative, cost-effective solutions can change lives. With the right support, dedication, and vision, we can continue breaking down barriers to education and empowering communities worldwide.
