Candie Gardens Greenhouse

Rihoy & Son is currently delivering restoration works to the upper greenhouse at Candie Gardens for the States of Guernsey. This historic structure, believed to date back to the late 18th century, is undergoing essential repair to secure its future and retain its unique place in the island’s heritage. With repairs now underway, the gardens remain open to the public throughout the project.

Our Bespoke Works team began by making the building safe using structural props and timber ledgers. A scaffold canopy was then erected to protect the structure during the full deglazing phase. Our goal throughout is to retain and reuse materials wherever practical.

The upper glasshouse is constructed from sliding glazed timber panels set into rebates – unlike more modern greenhouses seen across the island. Many of these panels were removed and are now being carefully repaired in our Joinery Workshop. The original timber profiles are being replicated in Douglas fir, sourced as raw sections and machined in-house to match.

On site, our team is carrying out timber repairs ranging from surface hardening to scarf joints and full structural replacements. Where required, components are being reinforced using stainless steel pins and brackets, developed in consultation with a structural engineer from the States of Guernsey. Many of these will be hidden after decoration is complete.

We are proud to contribute to preserving this rare and culturally significant building. Our integrated approach – bringing together bespoke projects, joinery and site engineering – demonstrates how traditional craftsmanship can support the future of Guernsey’s built environment.
