Candie Gardens Greenhouse: Completed

The historic upper greenhouse at Candie Gardens has been carefully restored by Rihoy & Son on behalf of the States of Guernsey. This timber-framed structure, thought to originate from the late 18th century, features unique sliding glazed panels and required urgent intervention due to timber decay and structural instability.

Our Bespoke Works team led the restoration, first stabilising the building with structural props before erecting a scaffold canopy to enable safe deglazing. Many of the original panels were removed and restored in our Joinery Workshop, where Douglas fir was hand machined to replicate original profiles.

Timber frame repairs ranged from minor hardening to complete structural replacements, with stainless steel reinforcements developed in collaboration with structural engineers from the States.

The project has now reached Practical Completion. With an emphasis on repair over replacement, the work preserves an important part of Guernsey’s built heritage for future generations. The gardens remained open throughout the programme.
