Since its founding, the E J Rihoy Charitable Trust has delivered practical support to some of the world’s most disadvantaged communities through investments in education, healthcare, community infrastructure, and opportunity creation across Africa. In 2024, the Trust began a new partnership with the David Mahungu Leadership Foundation (DMLF), a Kenyan organisation dedicated to developing young leaders from marginalised backgrounds. This partnership is now becoming the Trust’s primary overseas focus as both organisations work towards empowering future generations.
Over the coming years, the Trust will support DMLF’s ambitious growth plans, helping the Foundation expand from supporting 20 students in 2025 to reaching 500 students by 2030. This phased growth will extend DMLF’s reach beyond Laikipia into other underserved regions of Kenya, creating greater opportunities for education, leadership development, and community impact.
The progress of current scholars provides an early glimpse of the transformative impact this partnership can achieve.
Rosa Nduta: Turning knowledge into practice
For Karatina University student Rosa Nduta, March was a month of bringing classroom learning to life. A visit to the Kiganjo National Trout Hatchery provided valuable insight into broodstock management, water quality control, and sustainable fish production.
The experience reinforced the importance of aquaculture in supporting food security and environmental sustainability. Combined with mentorship and exposure to extension services that support local farmers, Rosa continues to build the skills and experience needed for a future career in the sector.
Agnes Waithira: Growing through resilience
Moi University student Agnes Waithira has shown impressive resilience during a challenging academic year. Alongside her degree studies, she successfully completed her CPA Foundation Level examinations and developed practical skills in Excel, research, and Sage Accounting Software.
Beyond academics, Agnes remained active in community projects, environmental conservation initiatives, leadership programmes, and student activities. Her experiences have strengthened both her professional capabilities and her commitment to giving back to the community.
Grace Akiru: Building confidence in the classroom
Grace Akiru, a third year student at Rongo University, is currently undertaking her teaching practice at Nyaburumbasi Dok School in Kisii County. Teaching Biology and Chemistry to Grade 8 and Grade 9 learners, she has gained valuable experience in lesson delivery, classroom management, and learner engagement.
She has also been actively involved in coaching girls’ volleyball and supporting school activities, helping to build strong relationships with learners while developing her own leadership and communication skills.
Investing in future leaders
The stories of Rosa, Agnes, and Grace demonstrate how education, mentorship, and opportunity can unlock potential and create lasting change. As the partnership between the E J Rihoy Charitable Trust and DMLF continues to grow, more young people will have the opportunity to develop their talents, strengthen their communities, and become the next generation of leaders across Kenya.
